What is a Podiatrist?
A podiatrist is a health care professional who specialises in the diagnosis, treatment and management of lower limb conditions. Podiatrists are uniquely qualified to treat the lower limb and foot based on their training, education and experience. A podiatrist can significantly improve peoples’ quality of life by promoting and maintaining mobility.
Over a lifetime we walk around 100,000 miles so it comes as no surprise that 75-80% of people develop a foot problem at some stage during their life.
Podiatrists work in a variety of different settings. Some work in hospitals and others work in private practice clinics. Podiatrists treat patients of all age ranges and at all stages of life. The scope of practice of a podiatrist ranges from:
Management of skin and nail pathologies e.g. Ingrown toenails, corns,
callus or fungal nail infections
Management of patients with diseases that can compromise the viability
of the foot and lower limbs e.g. diabetes, vascular disease, wound care
Musculoskeletal conditions
Biomechanics and gait analysis
Sports injuries
Paediatrics
Minor surgical procedures
